Jerry Kaplan

Jerry Kaplan is widely known as an Artificial Intelligence expert, serial entrepreneur, technical innovator, and bestselling author. He is currently a Fellow at the Center for Legal Informatics at Stanford University and a visiting lecturer in the computer science department, where he teaches social and economic impact of Artificial Intelligence. Kaplan founded several technology companies over his 35-year career, two of which became public companies. He has written several books, including "Humans Need Not Apply: A Guide to Wealth and Work in the Age of Artificial Intelligence” (Cheers Publishing, 2016). Kaplan has been profiled in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and Business Week. He holds a BA in the History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Pennsylvania. 

Artificial Intelligence will be the next big technological revolution. AI has the potential to transform our lives and vastly increase our wealth, but it will also present a challenge for many of today’s workers, because it will put people out of work and change the skills that are valued by employers. Artificial Intelligence will also change the way experts do their work. Programs can now scan large databases of unstructured information to diagnose medical problems, identify promising compounds for new drugs, analyze court decisions for legal precedents, watch crowds to look for wanted criminals, and even write news stories. This may lead to social disruption, unless we develop better ways to help workers and experts retrain for new jobs. I will discuss what kinds of jobs are likely to disappear, what kinds jobs will see increased demand, and how we should rethink the way we train and employ workers over their productive lifetimes.

China is in an excellent position to be a world leader in Artificial Intelligence technology, and to benefit from it. As the population ages, there will be fewer young workers to take their place, so the “robots” may arrive just in time to maintain continued growth and prosperity!
